David Bates left Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers this summer, after his contract at the club expired.
Bates and Miller were teammates in Rangers’ first-team for over a year, and the veteran striker immediately noticed how good the centre-back was.
Miller feels that Bates should be credited for leaving Rangers for Hamburg in the summer, in search of first-team football.
And the former Rangers front-man claims that he is hearing rumours that Bates will get a big move soon.
“I had 18 months with him at Rangers, and he is one of those lads that needs to play,” Miller said.
“You could see big Batesy had all the attributes. He has gone over to Bundesliga2 and I am hearing rave reviews about him. I hear bigger teams in Germany are reportedly sniffing around him about a possible move in January, or at the end of the season.
“It shows the character of the boy that he has gone to that level. He could have stayed at Rangers or somewhere closer to home, but he has taken the plunge and decided to try something different. By all accounts it has worked out great for him.”
Bates was only really used in a rotational role during his two full seasons at Ibrox.
The young defender made 28 appearances in total for Rangers, before he departed for Germany.
Since leaving for Hamburg, Bates has gone on to impress and has now forced his way into the Scotland squad.
The ex-Rangers man could make his international debut in the coming days, when Alex McLeish’s side take on Albania and Israel.
