Rangers are criticised for not bringing enough young Scottish players through.
Ex Rangers striker Kenny Miller has criticised Steven Gerrard’s side for not offering the Scottish national team enough talent.
Miller believes Rangers are lagging behind rivals Celtic when it comes to letting homegrown talent blossom.
He pointed to Rangers having just Ryan Jack as a regular in the Scotland international team, a 2018 signing from Aberdeen.
Miller was quoted by Football Scotland: “It’s about who has came through at Rangers since Murray Park being there. There’s not too many.
“You look at Celtic in the last three years, three of their best performers, Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Kieran Tierney. All homegrown boys. Mikey Johnston broke through last year and is really coming to prominence this year.
“It’s not easy, but questions need to be asked why are one of the biggest teams in the country are toiling to bring players through.
“I’m trying to think outside of Ryan Jack, who could be in the Scotland squad out of the Rangers team.”
Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor was a regular for Scotland before announcing his retirement earlier this year.
Scotland are coming off two frustrating international results, the latest being a chastening 4-0 home defeat to a world class Belgium side.
There is naturally a lot of soul searching and an inquest, with changes in management failing to provide answers.
It is only right that focus turns to the players, and whether enough is being done to develop young talent.
But that is a question which needs to be answered across Scotland, rather than being pinned on one club. Rangers’ job is to get better themselves, and their academy is a big part of that.
