Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish believes that Jurgen Klopp will decide to take a break from football one day in the future and that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could be in line to replace him, writing in his weekly Sunday Post column.

Klopp gave an interview to FourFourTwo last week, suggesting that if the German left Merseyside tomorrow, one of the first phone calls from the club’s hierarchy would be to the Ibrox boss.

Gerrard was left flattered by the comments, telling reporters he wants to see Klopp stay at the Reds for years yet, given his success (BBC).

Dalglish doesn’t think the UEFA Champions League winning manager is going anywhere soon, but does think a time will come when he wants to take a step back after achieving what he wants to at the club.

As quoted by The Sunday Post, he said: “There is much more he still wants to achieve – in particular Liverpool’s first league title since 1990 – and this season has started very well.

“But the time will come when he decides it’s time to take a break, and nobody would be critical of him for doing so.

“At some stage, everybody needs a rest, a time to draw breath and take stock.

“When that scenario unfolds, Steven Gerrard, I’m quite certain, will come into the thoughts of everyone at Liverpool.”

Klopp’s long-term future

The 52-year-old has gone on the record previously himself to comment on taking a break from football when the time is right.

As reported by The Guardian, he suggested back in August that when he does one day leave Liverpool, it will be time to go on a well-deserved holiday.

That’s not to say that Liverpool fans should worry about an imminent departure. As Dalglish notes, he has burning ambitions left at Anfield that many within the Reds camp will feel are achievable.

Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool looks on during the Premier League match between Sheffield United and Liverpool FC at Bramall Lane on September 28, 2019 in Sheffield, United Kingdom.

Having already won another European Cup for the club, it’s time to set their sights on English Premier League glory.

As for his replacement? Only when he leaves can that be properly discussed. Right now Gerrard isn’t doing his chances much harm with the way he’s going about his job at Rangers.
