Leeds United want to sign Jack Marriott after his brilliant season with Peterborough United.

During Leeds’ shocking FA Cup defeat to Newport County, it arguably became painfully clear that the Whites are taking a massive gamble if they let the January transfer window close without strengthening their striker options.

Jay-Roy Grot and Pierre-Michel Lasogga were poor at Rodney Parade, and their performances were hardly anomalies, even with Lasogga boasting a number of goals to his name since he arrived at Elland Road on loan.

Given their displays, it would be a major shock if Kemar Roofe did not start Leeds’ next game, which comes this weekend when they travel to Portman Road to face Ipswich Town in the Championship.

Roofe tops Leeds’ scoring charts in the league with seven goals, and that tally becomes all the more impressive when you consider that he has often been used out on the wing.

The 25-year-old has been the Whites’ most impressive striker option, and that should undoubtedly allay any concerns that the club may possibly have about one of their reported January targets and convince Leeds to make sure that they go out and win the race for his signature.

The Whites are leading the race for Jack Marriott along with Hull City, according to the Daily Mirror, after his stunning start to the season with Peterborough, for whom he has scored 17 goals in just 26 League One games.

If Leeds have any hesitation about targeting Marriott due to the levels he has spent most of his career at, they only need to look at how Roofe has adapted to life in the Championship following his brilliant spell with Oxford United to see that a goalscorer can be a goalscorer in most divisions if given the chance.

Leeds now need to do everything they can to give Marriott the chance to prove that he is more than good enough to play and thrive in the second tier. It may prove a deal that is hugely beneficial to their promotion hopes.
