Will Tyler Roberts challenge Kemar Roofe for his first-team spot at Leeds United after the latter’s anonymous showing in Hull?
Kemar Roofe took a bit of criticism from Leeds United fans after Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at Hull City – and rightly so.
The former Oxford United man struggled in a major way up front in Thomas Christiansen’s 4-4-2 system alongside Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Such was his struggles, the 25-year-old only managed to touch the ball 27 times in 90 minutes.
Lasogga didn’t fare much better, only touching the ball 36 times, but the Hamburg loanee is simply a bigger goal threat than Roofe and was unlucky not to win it late on in spite of a fairly anonymous showing.
With that in mind, you have to wonder whether Roofe will be fearing for his spot in Christiansen’s first XI – especially after 19-year-old striker Tyler Roberts was signed on deadline day.
The £2.5 million addition is unlikely to start Saturday’s visit of Cardiff City, but he will be hungry to impress the Leeds boss and Roofe should be feeling rather insecure about his first-team place.
Tuesday night wasn’t the first time that a match completely passed the £3 million Garry Monk signing by this season, but Roofe should ensure that it is the last.
Roofe has 10 goals in all competitions this season, which isn’t bad, but six of those were scored in hat-tricks against Newport County and QPR so perhaps the Whites attacker could be a little more consistent in front of goal. With Roberts representing another option, he probably has to be in order to stay in the side.
