Kemar Roofe has insisted that Leeds United are not giving up on their promotion dream.
Kemar Roofe has admitted that Leeds are hurting a lot after back-to-back defeats have left their automatic-promotion hopes dangling by a thread, but insisted that Marcelo Bielsa’s men will not feel sorry for themselves and still plan to ensure that they will be playing in the Premier League next year.
The Whites now find themselves with a mountain to climb if they want to finish in the top two in the Championship. Having boasted a three point lead over Sheffield United with four games remaining, they now sit three points back with an inferior goal difference after losing against Wigan and Brentford.
With the Blades facing already relegated Ipswich Town in their next fixture, Leeds may well be expecting to find themselves six points adrift by the time they next take to the pitch, which comes the following day against high-flying Aston Villa.
It certainly does appear that the Whites will need to win the play-offs if they hope to secure the promotion that they looked destined for for much of the campaign.
But Roofe is adamant that Leeds can put their last two results behind them and ensure that they return to England’s top table…
There is not a chance that Leeds will shift their attention away from trying to catch either the Blades or the Canaries while it is mathematically possible. But if it is going to be the play-offs for the Whites, then their hopes of reaching and winning at Wembley may receive a slight boost from the fact that they go into the final two games of the season needing something of a miracle.
Had Leeds remained in the driving seat and thrown it away on the last day of the season, it would be even tougher for Bielsa to pick his side up again and get them to put their disappointment behind them in time for the semi-final.
The best case scenario would see Leeds go into the final day with an outside chance of finishing in the top two. Perhaps finding themselves in a situation where many are now writing them off could be the catalyst that inspires Leeds to produce one final comeback this season.
