Steven Davis is expected to join Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers imminently.

Steven Davis of Rangers celebrates after scoring during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Hearts at Ibrox Stadium on May 7, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Keith Gillespie has told The Daily Mail that Rangers target Steven Davis is comparable to George Best and claims that he’d be the best player in Scotland, if the Gers move materialises.

The Scottish Sun reported on Friday that Rangers have signed Davis from Southampton, but that a deal won’t be confirmed until early next week.

The 34-year-old has clocked over 300 Premier League appearances with various clubs, either side of a four-year spell at Ibrox which finished in 2012.

In addition to an experienced club career, the brilliant midfielder also has over 100 caps for Northern Ireland.

And Gillespie, his compatriot, says that Davis is going to take the Scottish Premiership by storm.

He told The Daily Mail: “You mention names like George Best, Pat Jennings and people like that. Steven Davis has got to be up there.

“If he comes to Rangers, he’d be the best player in the league. He is sensational. He knows how to get on the ball and how to dictate games – that’s what makes him such a good player.”

It’s a very bold claim to say that Davis would be the best player in the Premiership.

It may be true, but it’s certainly up for debate. Gillespie might be overlooking a number of truly excellent midfielders – most of whom are at Celtic, whose fans will argue that the likes of Tom Rogic and Callum McGregor are superior.

What isn’t up for debate is the fact that Davis is a classy operator and Steven Gerrard’s side will be much better with him.
