Keith Downie has told Give Me Sport that he believes “there is a chance” Newcastle will sign Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr this summer. The Senegal star is expected to leave after the Hornets were relegated from the top tier.
Sarr, 24, has endured a difficult season compounded by numerous injuries – limiting him to just 22 Premier League appearances. In that time, he has had a hand in seven goals, scoring five and creating two. But he struggled.
A lack of momentum due to injury has hampered Watford on the whole, given Sarr is one of his side’s best players – if not the best. Proven by his 19 goal involvements in the Championship last term, as Watford went up.
Reports claim that Sarr’s representatives have opened talks with Newcastle over a £40million move. Sky Sports reporter and Newcastle correspondent Downie believes there is a chance the Toon sign Sarr in the coming weeks.
“There’s a chance that can happen. They could get him in a sort of cut-price deal with him being relegated; I can’t see him being in the Championship next season,” Downie claimed. “I can see him working well at Newcastle.”
Downie says Newcastle could sign Sarr – Watford ace ideal signing
Downie hits the nail on its head in his analysis, claiming that Sarr suits Howe. The ex-Bournemouth gaffer likes pace in his attack in order to play on the counter and Sarr is certainly that. Goals, assists, and still only 24.
To land Sarr for £40million is perhaps slightly expensive, but it is a brilliant signing. Newcastle have Allan Saint-Maximin, but he might need replacing as there are reports claiming he could be sold in the coming months.
Certainly, a coup for Newcastle if they can get Sarr, a player Ben Foster branded “phenomenal”.
