Reds stopper Simon Mignolet has signalled his intent to leave Anfield if he is consigned to the bench, with Jurgen Klopp preferring Loris Karius.

The Times report Mignolet is keen to quit so he can play regularly, setting his sights on a place in Belgium’s World Cup squad.

Goalkeeper is one position Benitez is hoping to improve, with the Spaniard unconvinced over Karl Darlow or Rob Elliott.

The Sun report Newcastle are looking at Pepe Reina, who played under Benitez at Liverpool and Napoli.

Mignolet is six years younger than 35-year-old Reina and has more recent experience as a weekly starter in the Premier League.

While Mignolet’s Sunderland past should not be ignored, allegiances are often forgotten when it comes to opportunities, just ask former Toon star Steve Harper who controversially switched between clubs at the end of his career.

The Liverpool goalkeeper wants to play regularly, and Newcastle are a Premier League side who are in a position to grant him that chance.

It has become clear that Mignolet needs a fresh start, and before moving for Reina, Newcastle should enquire with Liverpool to see if they can strike a deal for the Belgium international.
