Teenage prospect Keanan Bennetts surprised many with his decision to quit Spurs to join Borussia Moenchengladbach last month.

Bennetts, 19, was a regular for Tottenham’s under-23 side and began training with Moenchengladbach this week.

Bennetts has been speaking to ‘Gladbach’s official website about the move and said it was an easy decision.

He is half German and speaks the language already and believes he could progress to the first team quicker than had he waited around at Spurs.

Bennetts says he is ‘all in’ on the move to Germany and is not just simply planning to hop back to England when the chance comes.

He said: “For English footballers, the goal is mostly the Premier League. But I just wanted to become a professional. Sometimes the ways change. And if there is a new possibility, you have to seize it. Since I’m half German, the Bundesliga was always an option for me. I do not see that as a detour.

“In England it’s harder for young players to make the breakthrough.”

Tottenham have a good record of bringing through young players, but their recent ascendancy to become title challengers and competing in the Champions League has raised the standard and made it tougher to give regular minutes to top prospects.

Bennetts may go on to prove Spurs wrong for not fast tracking him sooner, and his progress will be worth keeping an eye on.
