Eight years ago, Manchester City signed Vincent Kompany from Hamburg for £6m.
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany yesterday celebrates eight years at the Premier League club after signing from Hamburg in 2008.
In 2016 the defender is still a key part of City’s side. A leader, captain and driving force behind the club’s success – and all for the bargain price of £6 million.

Over the years, Kompany has established himself as one of the best central defenders in the world. The Belgian’s transfer value has increased to around £30 million, £24m more than what City originally paid for the defender.
Kompany is surely the best £6 million City have ever spent. He is a dominant, vocal player who very rarely makes a mistake, and a central defender that all teams would want in their squad.
Manchester City are renowned for splashing the cash on players, however they haven’t always spent wisely.
Central defender Eliaquim Mangala moved from Porto to City in 2014 for £32m – making him at the time the most expensive defender in British football. Mangala was originally bought to play alongside Kompany at the back. The Frenchman hasn’t lived up to his reputation of one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe.

Mangala has struggled to cope with life in the Premier League, new boss Pep Guardiola is looking to sell the defender this summer.
The Frenchman’s problematic spell at the club only makes Kompany’s success look even better, and City should be thankful that at least one of the deals struck gold.
