Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri will want to forget this weekend’s performance, after the Foxes lost 4-1 to Liverpool.

Goals by Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane put Liverpool 2-0 up. Jamie Vardy put Leicester back in the game, but second-half goals from Adam Lallana and Firmino finished off the Foxes.

Here’s three talking points from Leicester’s awful performance on the weekend:

Leicester don’t look like top four contenders

It’s early days and with four games in, you can’t determine where each team will end up in May. However, Leicester’s performances so far haven’t shown signs that the Foxes can repeat last season’s success and compete at the top. Four games in and Leicester have so far taken four points.

Competition for the top four has stiffened with teams such as Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea getting off to a flying start. With the added pressure of the Champions League to deal with, the Foxes have an intense schedule to contend with, not to mention the task of defending their Premier League title. The Foxes have so far struggled.

N’Golo Kante has left a big hole in Leicester’s side

Since the departure of N’Golo Kante to Chelsea this summer, trying to find a player who can perform as well as Kante was always going to be difficult. It’s clear to see that the Foxes are missing Kante’s pace, energy and presence’s. Replacement Daniel Amartey has got the hard task of trying to re-create the Kante magic.

Leicester’s once unstoppable midfield was broken down by Liverpool, with the Reds running straight through and breaking the midfield down time and again. It’s time Ranieri changed his predictable 4-4-2 tactics.

Daniel Amartey failed to perform

Leicester's Riyad Mahrez and Daniel AmarteyNew boy Daniel Amartey has still got a lot to learn

Kante’s replacement failed to perform against Liverpool. Amartey looked like a different player to the one who helped Leicester beat Swansea 2-1 earlier this term. Against Swansea, Amartey put in a central-midfield performance that was praised by fans. Against Liverpool, Amartey failed to win any tackles or interceptions.

The 21-year-old has got some learning to do – he is still far from the finished product.
