Everton continue their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 victory to Middlesbrough.

Everton’s best ever start in the Premier League continued with a comfortable 3-1 victory to newly promoted Middlesbrough.

In a game that featured controversial goals from both sides, the Blues will be pleased to have come out on top .

Boro took the lead after Maarten Stekelenburg was put under pressure from Alvaro Negredo, which led to an own goal. Everton fought back almost immediately with Gareth Barry equalising, while goals followed from Seamus Coleman and the red hot Romelu Lukaku.

In a game where Everton rightly deserved the win, which three players stood out above the rest?

Gareth Barry

Everton's Gareth Barry celebrates scoring their first goal

Gareth Barry, who Ronald Koeman hailed as “One of the best he has managed”, made his 600th Premier League appearance against Boro – with only Frank Lampard and Ryan Giggs making more. In a case of great timing, Barry celebrated his remarkable achievement with a rare goal.

The 35-year-old put in another impressive performance, and rarely makes a mistake – Barry is without doubt still one of Everton’s most influential players.

Idrissa Gueye

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the bargain buy that is Idrissa Gueye. Gueye again was Everton’s man of the match. Supporting Barry in midfield, Gueye seemed to cover every part of the field – always being in the right at the place at the right time.

You can’t fault the Senegalese’s work ethic, Gueye’s performance included another assist as well as successful tackles. A player who Everton fans underestimated – his early performances this season make him a player that opposing teams should be wary off.

Ross Barkley

Ross Barkley had a point to prove against Boro, after a poor performance against Sunderland, which saw the midfielder subbed at half time – Barkley had to perform.

Barkley’s response was noticeable; his pace caused problems for Middlesbrough’s defence throughout the match.

Barkley alongside Barry and Gueye did a great job of always being available for a short pass from Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, and will be pleased to have bounced back with such great effect.
