Champions Leicester continue to struggle in the league as Southampton delivered a solid defensive performance to earn themselves a valuable point.

The Saints almost went in front themselves when Charlie Austin went close with two headers and hit the post. The striker almost scored in the second half but Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel saved his effort.

The Foxes best chances came from Jamie Vardy but the England international failed to find the back of the net. The striker has failed to re create the magic of last season – scoring just two goals in the league so far.

Saints boss Claude Puel was criticised for leaving his key players out of the 0-0 draw against Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday, but the Frenchman’s decision paid off, as Jose Fonte and Austin impressed for Southampton.

The visitors were tenacious throughout and constantly pressed the Foxes. Claudio Ranieri’s side simply do not possess the same swagger and confidence that they did last season.

After bringing both Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman to the Premier League, the Saints board clearly know a good manager when they see one. Puel has shown signs so far that he can also bring success to St Mary’s and continue their good work.

The draw means that the Saints remain in 10th with the Foxes moving up to 12th.

The clean sheet means Southampton have only conceded six goals in seven Premier League games so far, and Puel is building on the solidity he inherited.
