Manchester City and Everton will go head to head on the 15 October.

Ronald Koeman during his playing days at Barcelona

As the Premier League table stands, Manchester City come out on top with Everton behind in second. With five games played, both sides are currently unbeaten.

It does not come as a shock to find City as current league leaders with five wins from five; it does however come as a surprise that the team behind them is Everton. After their worst ever Premier League season under former manager Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman’s defensive organisation and constant pressing towards the opposition has been a breath of fresh air to watch.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola

Everton have taken 13 points from a possible 15 – their best ever start in the league, but the Blues will face their first test when they come up against City and Guardiola at the Ethiad Stadium in just over three weeks.

In a report by the Mirror discusses Koeman’s early career at Barcelona, when the Dutchman was a senior pro at the Spanish club their then manager Johan Cruyff told Koeman that he would be taking in a new room-mate, a teenager with a thirst for knowledge. Koeman was encouraged to tell the kid everything he knew. That kid was none other than Pep Guardiola.

Both managers are young with fresh ideas, with the experience and privilege of playing under Cruyff. Both are also straight to the point and take no messing. Koeman’s format has so far worked at Everton as there are clear signs that the Dutchman is getting the best out of a group of players who underachieved under Martinez.

It is early days, but under Koeman Everton could be a team for Guardiola to be wary of.
