One of the shock results from the EFL Cup third round saw Preston North End knock out Premier League side Bournemouth in a game that provided plenty of goals.

A hat-trick from Preston striker Simon Makienok was enough to send them through to the fourth round. Makienok opened the scoring in the 10th minute giving the Championship side an early lead.

Bournemouth looked like the likely winners after coming from behind to lead 2-1, with a Lewis Grabban penalty and goal from Dan Gosling.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe looks dejected after the game

The Lillywhites put up a great fight with Makienok scoring his second just before stoppage time, resulting in the game going to extra time. The striker’s third goal was enough to prevent the Cherries from salvaging a result.

Simon Grayson will be delighted with his side’s performance, Grayson’s job is under pressure lately due to a poor start to the Lillywhites’ season. However, the win for Preston should give his side a boost and confidence going into this weekend’s game against Wigan Athletic.

Preston were knocked out of last year’s competition by Bournemouth on penalties but they certainly got their own back this year.

The defeat for Bournemouth will put even more pressure on Eddie Howe to get a result against Everton at Dean Court on Saturday.
