Kazenga LuaLua moved to Sunderland on a free transfer in January.

Kazenga LuaLua has told the Northern Echo that he is willing to play in an unfamiliar position to help Sunderland.

LuaLua was snapped up by Sunderland in January, but he has been used sparingly so far, with injury affecting his progress.

The former Brighton and QPR man could have a chance to impress in Sunderland’s next match though.

LuaLua has been backed to start up-front in the contest, rather than in his usual position as a winger.

And LuaLua says that he is happy to play wherever for the team, as he is so desperate for minutes, after a difficult time at the Stadium of Light so far.

LuaLua said: “It is the manager’s choice and wherever he puts you, you play, I’m happy to do it. I’ve not played there too many times, I was always a winger at Brighton but wherever the manager puts me I’ll do a job for the team.

“I hope I can put a run together now, fingers crossed. It has been really hard for me since I came here, I’ve had ankle issues. But I’ve trained for a few days now and feel fine after that game, so hopefully I can stay fit until the end of the season.”

Chris Coleman’s need to potentially try LuaLua up top rather sums up Sunderland’s striking problems.

The Black Cats have failed to find a clinical finisher in their ranks, with their current attacking options struggling.

Ashley Fletcher has failed to hit the back of the net with any frequency since joining, which may means Coleman needs to re-assess his options.

Sunderland are next in action after the international break when they take on Derby County.
