Nottingham Forest recently approached Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough.

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough recently turned down the chance to manage Nottingham Forest. The Guardian quoted Clough as saying that he wants to continue in his role at Albion and ascertain their Championship status for the 2017-18 campaign.

Forest are on the hunt for a new permanent manager following the dismissal of Philippe Montanier last month due to a run of poor results. Gary Brazil, the club’s academy manager, has been put in charge of the first team on a caretaker basis.

Clough has long-standing ties with Forest. The former England international started his professional club football career at the Reds and was on their books until 1993.

The 50-year-old’s father, the legendary Brian Clough, managed the club from 1975 until 1993, and won the old First Division title in 1978 and the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 among other major trophies.

West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady has given her opinion on Clough’s decision not to take charge of Forest.

“Nigel Clough refuses to turn the wheel full circle and manage his father’s old club, Nottingham Forest,” Brady wrote in her football diary in The Sun.

“How could he? Dad Brian won the league and two European Cups and Nigel played over 400 games.

“He says he’s staying at Burton out of loyalty. Maybe he didn’t fancy joining the line of eight sacked bosses in owner Fawaz Al Hasawi’s reign as his last, bitter memory of the club he loves.”
