West Ham vice-chairman says Tottenham Hotspur chief has a big decision to make.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy
Tottenham Hotspur have long been reluctant to hand bumper pay deals to their players but have begun to relent this season.
Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris both signed contracts around £100,000 per week this season and this has raised the bar.
The Independent reported recently that star defender Tony Alderweireld is expecting parity amid ongoing talks over an extension.
West Ham United Vice Chairman Karren Brady
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been called out over the issue by competitor Karren Brady, vice-chairman at West Ham.
She told The Sun: “Their chairman Daniel Levy keeps to a strict pay agenda and Alderweireld may find robbing a bank is easier [than netting a big increase].
“There is another point. Kane scores 20-plus goals, Alderweireld stops far more. Who should be paid more? Over to you, Daniel.”
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld during training
Alderweireld was unable to stop West Ham earning a crucial 1-0 win over Tottenham on Friday night, a result which appears to have ended Spurs’ title hopes.
The Belgian has though nonetheless been a key part of a defence which is the meanest in the Premier League.
Spurs have conceded only 23 goals in 35 games, six fewer than league leaders Chelsea.
Tottenham can save a substantial portion on their wage bill if they can offload high earner Moussa Sissoko this summer, who The Mirror report signed a £5 million per year deal last summer, £95,000 per week.
Putting that towards giving Alderweireld and a couple others a nice pay increase would be a wise idea.
