Karl Robinson comments on Chris Wood exit from Leeds United

Chris Wood has joined Burnley from Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

Charlton Athletic manager Karl Robinson has told Sky Sports that he would have fought to keep hold of Chris Wood if he were at Leeds United.

Wood recently left Championship club Leeds to join Premier League outfit Burnley in the summer transfer window.

According to Sky Sports, the Clarets had to pay the West Yorkshire club a transfer fee of £15 million in order to secure the services of the New Zealand international striker.

Wood was one of the best players for Leeds, as he scored 27 goals in the Championship, with the Whites almost finishing in the top six.

The 2016-17 campaign was arguably the best in the career of the 25-year-old, and it will be interesting to see how Leeds compensate for the goals that he scored last season.

League One club Charlton manager Robinson, who managed Milton Keynes Dons in the Championship, has given his take on Leeds’s decision to part company with Wood.

The 36-year-old has suggested that he would have tried harder to keep hold of Wood.

“At some stage you’ve got to hold your hands up and accept he’s going to move on, but I’d like to think that I would fight to keep the best player,” Robinson told Sky Sports.

“When do you ever get the full £15m [to spend]? Most managers will tell you if it’s £20m they’ll probably get £10m.

“How often do you ever see someone going for that kind of money in the lower leagues and the manager gets the full amount?

“You can’t replace him for £15m. You might get two players for £7m each, but that won’t replace the one quality player you’ve got. Chris Wood had everything, the power, strength and ball retention.”
