Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow has returned from his loan spell at Championship club Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow has told The Chronicle that he wants to be the first choice between the posts next season.
The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2014, but he remained at the Championship club on loan for the 2014-15 campaign.
The Englishman is now training with the Magpies squad ahead of the upcoming 2015-16 campaign, and he has made it clear that he is aiming for the number one spot between the posts.
“My aim is to fight it out and see where I end up,” Darlow told The Chronicle. “I’ll do my best throughout pre-season and see where that leaves me at the end of that.
“It’s been a long time coming and a long time for me waiting to come to the club. I’m obviously delighted and excited to be here and working hard.”
Is it feasible?
Darlow may sound confident, but he will have to work really hard and hope that others slip up.
At the moment, Tim Krul is the first-choice goalkeeper at Newcastle and Rob Elliot is his deputy.
It is hard to see Netherlands international Krul being dislodged from his place anytime soon, which means that in the initial stages of the 2015-16 campaign, Darlow will have to try to become the number two.
However, the former Forest player is very talented and has experience. If Darlow makes the most of the chances he gets, then he could find himself playing regularly for Newcastle in the long run.
