Newcastle United are flying high at the top of the Championship.
Karl Darlow has told The Chronicle that the competition for places at high-flying Newcastle United is simply “incredible”.
The Magpies beat Preston North End 2-1 at Deepdale on Saturday to maintain their spot at the top of the Championship.
Both goals came from Aleksandar Mitrovic as the Serbian striker started in the absence of Dwight Gayle, whose 11 Championship goals has him leading the chase for the Golden Boot.
In fact, the win took on extra significance after Huddersfield lost 5-0 at Fulham in a defeat which opened up a six-point cushion for Newcastle in the automatic promotion spots.
Indeed, Rafael Benitez appears to have built himself a quite wonderful squad, and one which is heavily expected to last the distance en route to winning Premier League promotion.
And goalkeeper Darlow has said that the competition for places is majorly impressive, with his team-mates all pushing one another for a spot in Benitez’s best XI every week.
“Definitely people are being pushed on to the next level at the moment,” he told The Chronicle.
“Competition for places is incredible. We’ve got such a good squad that we can hopefully keep rotating and hopefully keep winning games.
“Everyone is pushing to play in every single game, with competition fierce and it’s showing out on the field. The lads want to perform and do well out on the field, and long may our run continue.”
Newcastle, three points clear of second-placed Brighton, host Cardiff City at St James’s Park on Saturday as the Magpies look to take another step toward a return to the big time.
