Karl Darlow has explained that playing away from home made his mistake in Newcastle United’s game with Norwich City much more difficult to deal with at the time, the Chronicle reports.

Darlow has arguably been one of the most reliable performers in Rafa Benitez’s squad this season, but with the score at 1-1 at Carrow Road, his decision to come off his line and try and kick the ball up the field led to plenty of embarrassment.

The 26-year-old failed to make any kind of good connection with the ball and ended up slicing it back towards his own goal allowing Canaries forward Cameron Jerome to walk the ball into the net to hand the home team a 2-1 lead.

And Darlow admitted that having to play the last 73 minutes while reflecting on his mistake was made tougher due to the fact that they were not playing at St James’ Park.

“It’s not nice because you think about it all the way through,” he said,as reported by the Chronicle.

“Mentally you have to deal with it. It’s what you’re paid big money to do at the end of the day, especially away from home with the crowd getting on me. It was one of them that I really had to concentrate and make sure I was solid for the rest of the game, which I think I did.

“I was thankful I got through that one and we move on from it.”

While the Magpies ultimately claimed a draw, Darlow’s disappointment over the mistake would have surely lingered for a considerable amount of time as it was only in the 81st minute that Jamaal Lascelles scored the equaliser.

Although Darlow may be concerned about what the dropped points may ultimately mean for Newcastle’s season, it is surely fair to say that he has done enough throughout the campaign to be forgiven for the odd mistake.

He has now kept 12 clean sheets from the 25 appearances he has made in all competitions this season and that has been a key reason why Benitez’s men have control of their own destiny when it comes to securing the Championship title.
