Karl Darlow comments on Newcastle’s recent run, and physical aspect of the Championship

Darlow has kept goal during a good run of form for Newcastle, and relishes the physical side of the game.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow seems to thrive on the physical element of the Championship, and seems pretty confident having kept goal for a six-match winning run – the Chronicle reports.

Darlow experienced the physical aspect of the game in the latter stages of the 2-1 win over Preston North End at Deepdale last weekend – with that run helping keep the side three points clear at the top of the division.

Darlow, who has been given a run as the regular goalkeeper in place of Matz Sels, is quoted in the Chronicle, saying: “Since I’ve come into the team we’ve won six on the bounce in the league, and you can’t ask for any more than that really.

“It’s just been nice to be playing and be involved in this run that we’re on.

“It was a tough game [at Preston] but it’s one of them that I was going to get clattered at some point because they were just lumping balls into the box – that seems to be the tactic against us away from home.

“It’s nice to feel it sometimes because then you know you’ve been in a game the next day.”

For Newcastle, it has to be a positive that their goalkeeper relishes the physical aspect of going up against their opponents. Given the quality that Rafa Benitez’s side have, sides will feel they can’t just play a more natural, free-flowing game against them, so will probably a bit more physical and try and rough the current league leaders up.

It’s something the side has to be prepared for, and no doubt the Magpies boss has issued this particular warning to his players, but if Newcastle are making it known they are enjoying that aspect of the play too, it could be pretty demoralising for some of the division’s other sides coming up against them.
