New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns gave San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama a tougher Game 1 test than Chet Holmgren managed in the previous round.
New York’s 105-95 win was about more than the final score. It also showed a clear difference in mindset, with Towns attacking the matchup while Oklahoma City often struggled to put real pressure on the rim.
The early comparison made Towns’ performance feel even more pointed. His willingness to challenge Wembanyama inside became one of the sharpest storylines from the opener.

Karl-Anthony Towns exposes Victor Wembanyama in New York Knicks statement
Underdog NBA highlighted the contrast from Game 1, with Karl-Anthony Towns making six layups against Victor Wembanyama after Chet Holmgren had only five across the entire Western Conference Finals.
The number stood out because Wembanyama usually changes how opponents think near the rim. His size, reach, and timing can make even clean looks feel rushed.
Towns did not play as if the matchup scared him. He finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists, giving the Knicks the kind of interior confidence Oklahoma City often lacked.
The layup stat showed intent. Towns did not only try to pull Wembanyama away from the paint, he also challenged him close to the basket and won enough of those moments to shift the tone.
Karl-Anthony Towns makes Chet Holmgren look worse against Victor Wembanyama
Holmgren’s comparison is uncomfortable because it stretches across seven games, not one night. He averaged 10.7 points and 7.1 rebounds against the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, which was not enough for a Thunder team that needed more inside.
Towns producing more layups against Wembanyama in one Finals game than Holmgren managed in an entire series reflects well on his force. It also reflects badly on Holmgren’s inability to consistently pressure the rim.
Oklahoma City had other problems in the series, including injuries and shot creation issues, so Holmgren was not the only reason the Thunder fell short. Towns’ immediate success against the same defensive anchor still made the contrast difficult to ignore.
Wembanyama will have time to adjust, and one game does not decide the matchup. Towns still gave the Knicks a blueprint that Oklahoma City never fully found.
