As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Karim Benzema has officially announced his retirement from international football.
A day after France’s loss in the World Cup final to Argentina, the Ballon d’Or winner has decided to put an end to his time with Les Bleus.
Why did Benzema not play at the 2022 World Cup?
Unfortunately, Karim Benzema had suffered a thigh injury in the build-up to the World Cup.
As a result, the Real Madrid striker, much like Christopher Nkunku was forced out of action at the tournament.
Before the tournament, it seemed like Benzema was destined to set the competition on fire.
Winning the Ballon d’Or this year after a stellar season with Los Blancos whilst also showcasing his class for France at the Euros and the Nations League, the stars seemed aligned for him to have a brilliant World Cup.
However, luck was just not on the legendary goalscorer’s side.

How good was Benzema in a French shirt?
It’s tough to judge Karim Benzema’s career for France, as he has only played in three major tournaments: Euro 2012, 2014 World Cup and Euro 2020.
The Real Madrid icon failed to make the cut in the 2010 World Cup squad, despite impressing for Lyon.
While the ageing forward was omitted from the squads for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.
Largely, Benzema has proven his class at international level as well.
But for a player of his stature, the decorated striker simply hasn’t participated at the big stage enough to replicate his club form for his nation.
Considering France seem just fine without Karim Benzema and him not getting any younger anyway, his decision to announce his retirement seems like the right one for all parties.
