Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports News (2:09pm, August 31, 2021) that Liverpool would not have signed Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane or Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku.
The former Liverpool star has said that the Merseyside club would not have gone for Lukaku when he was at Inter Milan.
Chelsea paid Italian champions Inter £97.5 million this summer to bring Belgium international striker Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge.
Sky Sports pundit Carragher has also said that Liverpool would not sign England international striker Kane from Tottenham.
Why?
Well, according to Carragher, it is because of Lukaku and Kane’s age.
Both the strikers are 28.
Carragher said on Sky Sports News (2:09pm, August 31, 2021), as transcribed by The Express: “Liverpool’s owners don’t have the revenue of Manchester City, Roman Abramovich, nor do they bring in as much money as Manchester United do.
“So, Liverpool have had a model since FSG have come in and it’s worked spectacularly. They’re seen as one of the best operators in the transfer market and how they go about their business.
“What Liverpool don’t do is they don’t make silly decisions, compared to when I was a player.
“So, everyone was calling for them to sign a centre-back permanently in January but they waited until the summer to get the one they wanted.
“When you see what Chelsea are doing bringing Lukaku in; it’s a fantastic signing but Liverpool wouldn’t pay that money for a 28-year-old striker.
“They wouldn’t have brought Harry Kane or a Ronaldo type who is 36. They don’t do that and have a set way of doing things which has proved to be successful.
“I think it’s difficult to criticise what Michael Edwards and FSG have done since they have been at the club.”
Should Liverpool have bid for Lukaku or Kane?
Lukaku and Kane are two of the best strikers in the world, and they would improve every single team on the planet.
There is no doubt that the Belgian or the England international striker would make Liverpool better.
However, you have to ask whether Liverpool need Lukaku or Kane.
After all, Egypt international forward Mohamed Salah is still banging in the goals for fun.
Salah has scored two goals and given two assists in three Premier League appearances already this season.
During the 2020-21 campaign, Salah scored 22 goals and gave five assists in the league.
