Former Everton winger Andrei Kanchelskis has slammed the Toffees’ board during an interview with bookmakers BetStars for overlooking David Unsworth as a permanent manager at Goodison Park.

Kanchelskis played alongside Unsworth at Everton during the latter’s first spell with the Toffees, as the Russian star turned out for the Merseyside club between 1995 and 1997 before moving to Fiorentina.

Unsworth, 44, took control of Everton’s first team after the sacking of Ronald Koeman and although he found it difficult to turn the tide, he did finish his short spell as caretaker manager with an excellent 4-0 win over West Ham and David Moyes.

With pressure rising on current manager Sam Allardyce’s shoulders, Kanchelskis has questioned the board’s decision to overlook Unsworth and instead give the Everton manager’s role to Allardyce.

I don’t understand why the directors and chairman didn’t consider them [Unsworth and Duncan Ferguson] as a permanent option for the role. I don’t understand why they didn’t keep Unsworth until the end of the season and then after see what happens,” Kanchelskis said.

Everton have been somewhat inconsistent under the guidance of Allardyce since he took control, and although the former England manager has steered them far from a relegation scrap, they remain in mid-table obscurity.

Seventh place could well prove to be a European spot this season and fans will be desperate for the Toffees to make a late push to qualify, as they sit six points behind Sean Dyche’s Burnley.
