Kamil Miazek will play for Leeds’ Under-23s initially but will hope to challenge Felix Wiedwald for the number one jersey at Elland Road.
When the international break gives way to the return of club football, Felix Wiedwald will be a man under the microscope.
The German goalkeeper has been pilloried after conceding eight goals in three games for Leeds United, including three apiece in successive defeats to Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday which brought a curt end to the club’s fine start to the season.
A number of Leeds supporters have even taken to social media to demand veteran shot-stopper Andy Lonergan replace Wiedwald between the sticks while the decision to let Rob Green go to Huddersfield Town has also been questioned.
And while 21-year-old Pole Kamil Miazek is set to represent the club’s Under-23s initially if he accepts the offer of a professional contract, Wiedwald may have another reason to look over his shoulder.
Club scout Jakub Bokiej confirmed on Twitter that Miazek had been offered a deal after impressing during a trial period at Elland Road. The young goalkeeper, who is a big fan of compatriot Wojciech Szczesny, was third choice at Feyenoord until recently and will move to Leeds on a free.
Though Miazek’s career is yet to really take off yet, he is a hugely promising shot-stopper who Feyenoord’s technical director Martin van Geel described as ‘highly talented’ back in 2015, as reported by the club’s official website.
If he impresses with the Under-23s, fans will want to see Miazek be given a chance in the senior side. And, as long as Wiedwald continues to struggle, supporters will be clamouring for someone else, anyone else, to take his place.
