Kamil Miazek was the star of the show as Leeds United’s under-23s claimed the Professional Development League title.
Jack Clarke may have converted the winning penalty, but Kamil Miazek was the player that most Leeds fans were talking about after the Whites’ under-23s won the Professional Development League title by beating Birmingham City on penalties.
Miazek played a key role in ensuring that the game went all the way as he made a couple of great stops during the goalless 120 minutes at Elland Road. But it was his two saves in the shootout that guided Carlos Corberan’s men to the trophy.
Leeds are blessed with a number of talented goalkeepers in their youth ranks. Miazek has been battling Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Will Huffer for much of the campaign, while Harrison Male and Joshua Rae have also had a chance between the sticks for the under-23s this term.
Peacock-Farrell is above the others in the pecking order having been a key man in the first-team this term. But with little to pick between the rest, there is a real opportunity for one to really emerge onto Marcelo Bielsa’s radar, and with that, there is also likely to be a chance that one or two will have to leave in some capacity to gain the senior football they crave.
And with Miazek out of contract this summer (via club’s official website), some may have wondered whether the Pole’s future may lie away from Elland Road.
But after his heroics at the weekend, it only seems right that Leeds look to extend Miazek’s contract to ensure that he is still on the club’s books beyond the summer.
He arguably showed that he has the potential to force his way into the first-team picture in the future. It is still going to be a huge task for the 22-year-old, but he shone on a huge stage when the pressure was on.
And it would be no surprise if Leeds were forced to regret not keeping him further down the line if they allowed Miazek to leave this summer.
