Kalvin Phillips has made a bright start to the season, featuring regularly for Championship high-flyers Leeds United.

Kalvin Phillips has told LUTV that the Leeds supporters seem to get a buzz from his style of play, in particular, some of the full-blooded challenges he puts in.

Phillips has been a key man for the Whites this season, with his four goals making him their top goalscorer in the Championship, and his partnership with Eunan O’Kane proving integral to Thomas Christiansen’s side’s positive start to the campaign.

Though the 21-year-old’s form has not been perfect, he is certainly enjoying the brightest spell of his career to date, both in terms of form and game-time, having started every league game thus far.

And as he opened up about his style of play, he appeared to suggest that his desire to win the ball back was a key reason why he is thriving at the moment.

“I’m just a physical player. I like to get about the pitch and I like rough people up who I’m playing against,” he told LUTV.

“I don’t intentionally mean to hurt people but some of the tackles do hurt people. And I think the fans buzz out off that sometimes. I’m just lucky that I’m doing what I’m doing.”

The challenge for Phillips will be trying to make sure that his full-blooded tackles do not land him in too much trouble, as they have done in the past.

He was sent off twice last season and is up to three yellow cards for the current campaign, so may not be too far away from a suspension. But while Christiansen may not be wanting to see Phillips making any reckless challenges, he will know how important that side of his game is.
