Kalvin Phillips is reportedly set to make his full debut for Manchester City this week in the League Cup, seven months after the midfielder signed for the Premier League giants from Leeds United.

According to the Daily Mail, the England international will finally be named in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI as City prepare to take on Southampton this Wednesday in the League Cup quarter-finals, with Phillps enduring a rough first season in Manchester.

Injuries have limited the 27-year-old to just six appearances for City in all competitions, with Guardiola also criticising Phillips after the 2022 FIFA World Cup for returning overweight. However, the midfielder is now seemingly set to be given his first real chance to impress this week.

Lauded as ‘brilliant’ by England teammate Jordan Henderson, Phillips made a £45m switch to City in the summer having established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League as well as a key player for Gareth Southgate’s England side.

However, things just haven’t gone to plan for Phillips in Manchester. But, this latest update could be just the beginning for the midfielder at City, with a full debut now on the cards in the League Cup against a Premier League side who have been in poor form this season.

Indeed, Phillips isn’t the first person to take their time getting adapted to City under Guardiola. And making his full debut this week will be a huge moment for the midfielder in what might be a long and prosperous career for the former Leeds star.

We all know what Phillips is capable of based on his years with Leeds and the England national team. And the 27-year-old must take his full debut with City with both hands, with a good performance against Southampton likely leading to more chances in the future.

As we know, City remain in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, and Phillips could easily become a regular in these matches if the midfielder can impress this week against the Saints, which might be easier said than done given how poor Nathan Jones’ side have been recently.
