Kalvin Phillips has praised his former Leeds United teammate Gjanni Alioski after England trashed North Macedonia 7-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night.

After spending many a year together on the same team when playing for Leeds United, the duo came up against each other for the first time yesterday in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

After the game, Kalvin Phillips posted a picture of himself, via his Instagram story, with a beaming smile on his face, where he is standing next to Gjanni Alioski, with the caption: “What a guy. Love you, brother.”

It was a night to forget for Alisoki because his nation was torn apart by England, but for Phillips, he scored his first goal for the Three Lions.

The Manchester City midfielder might not be getting many minutes on the domestic or international stage, but when he is picked, he is making the most of it.

Given the 27-year-old’s lack of minutes under Pep Guardiola, some have called for his exit this summer, only 12 months after Leeds sold their star man to Manchester City.

Leeds after Phillips and Alisoki

That journey back up for Leeds, after nearly two decades in the Championship, are moments the Elland Road faithful won’t forget.

Marcelo Bielsa was the brains behind it all, with the ever-reliable Phillips in the middle of the park and the no-nonsense Alisoki filling many positions across the pitch.

But fast forward to the present and the same can’t be said for the current crop of Leeds players, who weren’t just relegated, but they went down without a fight and now they have to try and make that difficult journey back up to the Premier League again.
