Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has told BBC Radio Leeds that he understands why he did not start against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

Phillips featured for Leeds in the Championship game against Wednesday away from home at the Hillsborough Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The 20-year-old midfielder did not start the game, but the youngster came on as a substitute in the 88th minute of the encounter.

The youngster started the Championship match against Fulham at Elland Road last week.

It must have come as a disappointment to Phillips not to start against the Owls, but the midfielder has said that he understands head coach Garry Monk’s decision.

“I took it well,” Phillips told BBC Radio Leeds when asked how he coped with not being in the Leeds starting lineup against Wednesday.

“Obviously Ronnie (Ronaldo Vieira) has been doing really well, (Liam) Bridcutt has just come in, good signing. Yes, obviously I was gutted, but always looking forward to the next game.”

Phillips is a talented and promising young midfielder, but he is not guaranteed a place in the Leeds starting lineup.

There is competition for places in the Whites’ midfield, and the youngster has to make the most of the chances he gets as the season progresses.

Leeds will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on League Two outfit Luton Town away from home at Kenilworth Road in the second round of the EFL Cup.
