Leeds United finally made the signing they wanted way back in 2019 as they landed Manchester United winger Daniel James on deadline day.
The Whites probably weren’t anticipating much incoming business in the final days of the window, but then Cristiano Ronaldo made his move.
The Portuguese ace rejoined Manchester United, and the Red Devils decided to make winger James available as a result of the ever-growing numbers in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.
Leeds swooped in to land James, signing him in a deal worth around £25million as the Welshman finally heads to Elland Road after all.
James, 23, was Leeds’ top target in January 2019, and a deal was agreed for the wide man to make the move to West Yorkshire from Swansea City.
James was at Elland Road, he’d taken the presentation photos, everything was in place… and then Swansea stopped answering phone calls.
The Swans failed to sign off on the deal, meaning James had to go back to South Wales and forget about the move to Leeds. Just a few months later, he was out of their reach as he joined Manchester United.
After two years at Old Trafford, Leeds have finally got their man – and Whites midfielder Kalvin Phillips is loving it.
Phillips took to Twitter on deadline day to state ‘better late than never’ whilst welcoming James to Elland Road, seemingly excited to finally play alongside the speedy winger.
