Leeds United lost to league leaders Newcastle United on Sunday.

Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips takes a corner

With Liam Bridcutt and Pablo Hernandez missing for Leeds United’s clash against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon, it was up to youngsters Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips to step up and battle against the Championship leaders.

Unfortunately for Leeds, things did not go according to plan, with a Dwight Gayle brace ensuring the Magpies took all three points back to St. James’ Park.

After the match Phillips in particular came in for criticism from a section of Leeds fans, but they would be wise to remember just how young and inexperienced the Whites’ central midfielder is despite his emergence this season.

Phillips did not have the ‘mare some Leeds fans are suggesting, with his 86 per cent passing accuracy proving his composure and maturity, while the three goal-scoring chances he set up for teammates showcased his effectiveness going forward.

However it is fair to say that the 20-year-old needs a rest after playing every minute of Leeds’ last nine league matches.

His performances in October earned him the EFL Young Player of the Month award, but against Newcastle he lost possession 15 times and managed just one successful tackle, one duel and one interception all match.

Phillips’ age means he is always going to have below-par performances, yet on this evidence Leeds cannot get Bridcutt and Hernandez back soon enough to ensure the pressure is taken off their next generation of midfielders.
