Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips will wear the #14 for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after England confirmed their squad numbers. So, who has worn that jersey at recent editions?

Gareth Southgate is taking Phillips to his first FIFA tournament after emerging as a key part of the Three Lions team during Euro 2020. But the 26-year-old travelled to the Middle East having only featured for 53 minutes across all competitions under Pep Guardiola this term.

A shoulder injury that required an operation kept Phillips on the sidelines for eight weeks. He only returned to Manchester City’s bench as they faced Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on November 9. Guardiola has only fielded the 23-cap anchor in four matches so far this term.

England confirm their World Cup squad numbers with Phillips taking the #14 shirt

Phillips gave his all to recover in time to convince Southgate that he could make England’s World Cup squad. Now, the Leeds-born star is off to Qatar and the Three Lions announced he will wear the #14 shirt. England kick off their tournament against Iran on November 21.

FIFA drew England alongside Iran, the United States of America and Wales in Group B. The Three Lions meet the USA on November 25 and Cymru on November 29 as Southgate bids to guide his nation to successive semi-finals. England finished in fourth during Russia 2018.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup is Phillips’ second major tournament with England after his role during Euro 2020. Southgate started the midfielder, who left Leeds United for Manchester City in a £45m transfer this July, in all seven fixtures on route to losing in the final to Italy.

So, ahead of England kicking off their Qatar 2022 campaign against Iran, HITC Football has looked at the players Phillips follows by wearing the #14 shirt at the past six World Cups…

Welbeck took the #14 squad number for the last World Cup at Russia 2018

Danny Welbeck took the #14 after making England’s World Cup squad for Russia 2018. The 31-year-old was a Three Lions regular outside of injuries between his debut in March 2011 to September 2018. He enjoyed 42 caps for his nation and struck 16 goals plus four assists.

Just three of Welbeck’s caps came during World Cups, despite featuring at Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, though. The forward started the Three Lions’ first two fixtures in 2014 against Italy and Uruguay. He also faced Belgium from the bench in Group G during their 2018 run.

Hodgson gave Henderson the #14 shirt before England floundered at Brazil 2014

Roy Hodgson gave Jordan Henderson the #14 shirt before England floundered at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Liverpool midfielder would also travel to South America as one of the Three Lions’ initial starters. He opened their 2-1 defeat to Italy and 2-1 loss to Uruguay.

Henderson fell to the bench as England claimed a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica in their final tie in Brazil. The 69-cap technician would later return to the World Cup stage at Russia 2018. He started five of the Three Lions’ seven fixtures – including their semi-final loss to Croatia.

Capello capped Barry at South Africa 2010 wearing the #14 for the Three Lions

Fabio Capello capped Gareth Barry in three games during the 2010 South Africa World Cup in England’s #14 shirt. The tournament marked the first time that FIFA took its event to the African continent. It was also the first World Cup where Barry featured in England’s squad.

The 41-year-old earned a total of 53 caps for the Three Lions between March 2000 to May 2012. But Barry only featured at one of a possible three World Cups and was not initially in Capello’s plans. He watched their opening 1-1 draw with the United States from the bench.

Bridge was the last defender England took to a World Cup with the #14 shirt

Wayne Bridge was the last defender that England took to a World Cup with the #14 shirt. Sven-Goran Eriksson included the left-back in his plans for the 2002 edition in Japan and South Korea. He also took him to Germany 2006, again with #14 on his Three Lions jersey.

The Southampton native only played a combined 15 minutes over two appearances at the World Cup, though. Eriksson brought Bridge off the bench against Argentina and Nigeria in Group F during 2002. He did not offer the 36-cap defender a second during Germany 2006.

Hoddle handed Anderton the #14 as England returned to the World Cup in 1998

England returned to the World Cup at France 1998 and awarded Darren Anderton the #14 when announcing their squad numbers. The Three Lions had failed to qualify for USA 1994. But they have reached the knockouts at each edition since bar Brazil 2014 under Hodgson.

Glenn Hoddle oversaw England’s efforts in France and started Anderton in all four of their fixtures. The 30-cap midfielder from Southampton also recorded one of his seven goals for the Three Lions. Anderton broke the deadlock in a 2-0 Group G win over Colombia in Lens.
