Kalvin Phillips excited for Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Leeds

Kalvin Phillips has suggested that he is extremely excited for Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Leeds United.

Kalvin Phillips has told Sky Sports News (21/06; 10:05 am) that he is very excited for Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Leeds and hopes that his reputation for developing young players helps turn him into the Whites’ main man in future.

Leeds have certainly captured the imagination ahead of the new season by confirming that Bielsa has been appointed as Paul Heckingbottom’s successor at Elland Road. It is certainly one of the club’s most exciting appointments ever with Bielsa one of the most well-known tactical innovators of the last few decades.

He has influenced a number of the top coaches in the country and Andrea Radrizzani will be hoping that Leeds see the best of him during the coming years – there is seemingly the potential for the appointment to go wrong in dramatic fashion.

And Phillips suggested that he cannot wait to start working with the 62-year-old after it was confirmed that Leeds would begin their Championship season with a home game against relegated Stoke.

“I’ve heard a lot about him. I’ve heard a lot of world class managers speaking very highly of him. I’m just excited to get in and work with him because I’ve read that he’s good with young players, so hopefully we can get a good team in and do the job this year and get Leeds back to where they belong,” he told Sky Sports News (21/06; 10:05 am).

“You always want to improve. As I get older, I still want to be improving. I had an alright season last season. Hopefully I can build on that and be the man to go to if Leeds are ever in any bother during the games.”

It would be little surprise if Bielsa see potential in Phillips. He has established himself as an important member of the squad over the last couple of years. And while he is not quite the finished product, he was brilliant in front of goal last season, contributing seven strikes throughout the campaign.

And if Bielsa can build on the parts of the midfielder’s game that he often gets praise for and cut out the aspects that sometimes frustrate the fans, then perhaps Phillips could quickly become a key part of a Bielsa-led Leeds side that is thriving.
