It has been reported that United are keen on signing Phillips from Premier League rivals Leeds.
The Red Devils have been plotting a move for the 25-year-old since the summer of 2021.
One of the reasons why United sold Wales international winger James to Leeds for £24 million, according to the report, ‘was influenced by their desire to improve relations with their rivals’.
The Premier League giants could make a formal bid for the England international midfielder in the summer of 2022.
The report has added that Leeds expect the Euro 2020 star to sign a new contract.

A lot of Leeds supporters will acknowledge that Phillips may need to move on.
The midfielder is one of the best in his position in the Premier League and deserves to be fighting for major honours.
Phillips himself may have aspirations of winning the Premier League title and playing in the Champions League.
That is unlikely to happen with Leeds anytime soon.
