The Chelsea winger needs to relaunch his career – Marseille would be the ideal next step.
Gael Kakuta was a man with high pressure on his shoulders for he had even kicked a ball at Chelsea. The legal wranglings of his move from Lens meant his reputation was a big one to live up to.
So far, even if we were being generous, it is clear he has not lived up to his star billing, and at 21 needs to show signs of progression.
Fortunately he did show just that last season, scoring four times in 14 games on loan at Dijon in Ligue One. Even so, his efforts were not enough to prevent the minnows from relegation, and so re-signing with the club and playing in Ligue Two for a year would not be good for his career path.
Yesterday it was reported that Marseille are keen on bringing Kakuta to the club on loan.
The prospective move appears as though it would be an ideal one for the young player.
Kakuta is a winger who needs to play first team football, he has been on the fringes for too long and he needs to go out and continue to make a name for himself.
Having Hazard, Mata, and Marin in front of him in the first team queue is quite a daunting prospect. De Bruyne is heading out on loan for experience and Kakuta would be wise to follow his path.
Marseille appear to be the right club for him to head to on loan. With a big reputation and loyal fans, it will present a good opportunity for him to get used to playing week in week out in front of one of the largest clubs in his home country.
They enjoyed a disappointing season last year, finishing 10th in Ligue One, but they still qualified for the Europa League, and can offer Kakuta a chance to play in the competition, which is surely better than sitting on the bench or not even making it when Chelsea play in the Champions League.
Kakuta impressed in a struggling team in Ligue One last year, so he needs to push on and play for a team who will be aiming for the top half.
PSG will be expected to dominate the league next season, but it is generally a wide open league, as Montpellier showed last season, and Marseille will want to improve on last season’s finish.
He would join winger Andre Ayew in the Marseille side and seek to supply the ammunition for star striker Loic Remy, should the Frenchman remain at the club by time the transfer window closes.
If Kakuta can continue to grow his reputation in his homeland, it will do wonders for his confidence. He has a contract until 2015, and while that seems a long while away, he needs a season of moving forward as soon as possible. Marseille could be just the place to do it.
For Chelsea, the benefit is next season they may just get back a grown-up star ready to joust for a first team spot.
