Rolando Aarons is facing an uncertain future at Premier League Newcastle United – but he’s finding form again in League One with Wycombe Wanderers.
Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth believes that Rolando Aarons is simply far too good for League One after the Newcastle United loanee scored the winning goal during Saturday’s 1-0 win against Shrewsbury Town, speaking to the Bucks Free Press.
You’d have got long odds in July of Wycombe topping the third-tier table going into the first week of November. But thanks to a crucial first half strike from Aarons, the Chairboys are three points clear of Ipswich Town in first place with an unexpected promotion challenge in their sights.
The injury-prone Aarons has had to be patient at Adams Park but everyone connected with Newcastle and Wycombe will be hoping that a first goal, in his sixth League One appearance, sparks a rejuvenation for a player whose talent has never been in question.
Ainsworth was thrilled when a deal was agreed to bring the 23-year-old to Wycombe on a season-long deal and the affable manager was understandably glad to see one of the most gifted footballers in the division get off the mark.
“He is a great player and he will terrorise defences in this league and he is definitely above this level,” said the former QPR midfielder.
“That goal will give him confidence.”
It is five years now since a teenage Aarons burst onto the scene with a dazzling performance as Newcastle beat Manchester City 2-0 away from home in an EFL Cup clash at the Etihad Stadium. Back then, he looked like a future star for Newcastle and, potentially at international level too, only for his career to unravel with a series of fitness problems.
Lets hope this is not merely another false dawn.
