Rafa Benitez has reportedly held talks with Paris Saint-Germain keeper Alphonse Areola regarding a move to Newcastle United but is it really necessary?
According to a report from France Football, Rafa Benitez is said to be looking to bring PSG shot-stopper Areola Alphonse to Newcastle United this summer in an attempt to bolster his options between the sticks for next term.
The report claims that the Newcastle coach has been in contact with the French international throughout the last season, while PSG are open to the idea of selling for a fee of around £14million.
The news however comes as somewhat of a shock to Premier League fans – and certainly to Newcastle supporters – after current Magpies stopper Martin Dubravka’s sensational start to life in England, putting in exceptional displays in wins over both Manchester United and Chelsea.
The 29-year-old has arguably been Benitez’s most effective signing on Tyneside, putting in nigh-on faultless performances, and the Spaniard has the option to take the player onboard full-time from parent club Sparta Prague for only £5million, should he choose to activate the clause.
Not only has the new man hit the ground running, but Newcastle also need to accommodate playing time for another two impressive goalkeepers in Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow.
Newcastle fans are begging for decent recruitment this summer, but this pursuit just seems a little unnecessary.
