Why Jurgen Klopp should prioritise bringing reported target Gianluigi Donnarumma to Liverpool this summer.
After missing out on Champions League football this term, Italian giants AC Milan may be forced into selling a big name player, and the imminent arrival of former Liverpool ace Pepe Reina – as reported by Football Italia – to the San Siro could open the door for Klopp to make a sensational swoop for the player being touted as the next Gianluigi Buffon, 19-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian international has drawn interest from Merseyside according to CalcioMercato, with Liverpool reportedly weighing up a £60million bid, and that should come as music to Liverpool supporters’ ears.
Rumours surrounding Liverpool at the moment are linking the club to attacking players, such as West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini (the Mirror) and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar (Daily Express), but the team is already stacked in terms of attacking talent.
In all likelihood nobody is going to come into the club and get into Liverpool’s front three on current form, and more to the point, why would they change anything? Klopp clearly must improve on the Reds’ obvious weaknesses, and they come at the back.
The goalkeeping position at Liverpool is arguably their biggest weakness, with neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius looking capable of commanding the defence between the sticks for the foreseeable future. Granted, Karius has improved this season, but the German international still frequently makes errors in judgement and has nervy moments in important games.
Signing Gianluigi Donnarumma would instantly sure up the Liverpool rearguard and the results could be devastating for the Reds’ opposition; considering Klopp’s outfit are already outscoring teams for fun. He would bring pedigree, top level shot stopping ability and longevity to the position.
At 19, the skipper is already considered one of the world’s best. In short, it is a no-brainier.
