Tottenham seem dead set on bringing in another winger this summer, but they really should be showing more faith in January signing Lucas Moura.

Tottenham look to have made signing another winger their top priority this summer, having been linked with moves for both Manchester United’s Anthony Martial (ESPN), and most recently Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic (FcIN), but they already have a quality wide-man desperate for game-time.

Lucas Moura’s January move from Paris Saint-Germain to Tottenham – ironically pushed through by the now Arsenal manager Unai Emery – was touted as potentially the best January deal of the season, yet the Brazilian has registered just five starts for Mauricio Pochettino last term.

It seems strange that the club are so adamant on bringing in a wide man this summer, while Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela are capable of occupying the wings in a conventional front three, with Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli filling the roles of inside forwards when wing-backs are used.

Another addition would likely see Moura become even more isolated at the club, and it doesn’t make sense. In 2016/17, the speedy forward was in sensational form, bagging 12 goals and five assists in Ligue 1 despite limited opportunists and he still hasn’t reached his prime.

He also boasts more passes per game (3.6) than any other player in the Champions League that season.

There’s no doubting Moura will have more to contribute next season under Pochettino, but the addition of another quality winger could see the former Sao Paulo man frozen out further in north London, and given his assurances over game-time after playing second-fiddle to Kylian Mbappe, he won’t rest on his laurels in the Spurs dugout.
