He has also become a fan favourite for his unwavering attitude. He may play on the edge, but the tireless runs out of possession, pressing and sheer desire to make things happen made the Austrian so vital to Moyes’ side.
Other than captain Mark Noble and maybe Joe Hart, there aren’t many leaders at the London Stadium and special players are always needed for teams at the lower end of the table. It certainly wouldn’t be a good start to life in east London for Pellegrini if he lost his best player in his first window.
