Celtic securing the signing of reported target Joe Allen could prolong the career of club captain Scott Brown.

Joe Allen has emerged as a key target for Celtic this summer, according to the Daily Mirror, with Brendan Rodgers known to be an avid supporter of the midfielder’s talents, having signed him at Liverpool after a spell together at Swansea.

The Stoke City midfielder was relegated to the Championship last term under the tutelage of Paul Lambert, and looks set for a move away from the bet365 Stadium and back to loftier ambitions next term.

If the club can find a compromise on the reported £25 million release clause in the Welshman’s contract (Daily Mirror), Rodger’s should definitely pursue bringing the player to Parkhead, as his quality would improve the club in a number of ways.

One significant impact Allen’s arrival could have is the prolonging of club captain Scott Brown’s career with the defending champions.

The 32-year-old Scot was named Player of the Year by the Scottish Football Writers Association after another fantastic season, but there are concerns regarding his long-term future with the club at his age.

Most known for his industrious work out of possession, the midfielder would benefit hugely from having the mobility of Allen in the midfield. The former Liverpool man is extremely underrated in possession, rarely losing the ball and moving opposition midfielders and defenders around with constant passing and movement.

This would allow Brown to drop into a deeper role to focus on screening the defence while crafting attacks from deep, as many midfielders have done before him – such as Steven Gerrard in his final years – allowing him to conserve energy and to stop his performance levels dwindling as he reaches his final years.

Celtic will undoubtedly have to bring in quality reinforcements this summer to ensure they stay at the pinnacle of the Scottish Premiership, and Allen would certainly represent something of a marquee signing if Rodgers can complete the deal.
