New Arsenal coach Unai Emery has a record against Premier League rival managers that suggests it may not be smooth sailing in England.
Arsenal’s new coach Unai Emery has failed to beat Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho in 15 attempts as a manager, suggesting he may have serious adjustments to make ahead of his debut season in the Premier League, according to Sky Sports News.
The 46-year-old won a hat-trick of Europa League titles between 2014 and 2016, but his current record against rival managers in the Premier League makes for a worrying read (if you are a Gooner), after spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla, Spartak Moscow, Valencia and Almeria.
The Spaniard’s record against fellow countryman Pep Guardiola is less than encouraging. Emery lost six and drew four of his 10 games against the Manchester City boss – a rate of 0.4 points per game – having played the majority of those contests at the helm of Valencia.
Although Guardiola has nothing but respect for Emery, claiming he is a “top manager,” on Wednesday.
His record against Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is not any better either, having lost four of their five meetings, drawing once – a rate of 0.2 points per game.
Of his match-ups against Premier League sides, the new Arsenal manager has won three of 11 games, with the latest coming in Sevilla’s fantastic comeback over Liverpool in the 2016 Europa League final.
The remaining wins came in Valencia’s two-legged Europa League win over Stoke City (2012), but he has faltered against Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea in European clashes.
This does not mean that Emery will fail against the same managers next season though. Arsenal are arguably his best club to date and he often came into clashes as the underdog with previous teams.
