‘It’s a nightmare’ – Keown comments on Ozil injury

Former Arsenal defender says that Mesut Ozil’s injury is a nightmare for the Gunners.

Martin Keown says that Mesut Ozil is a nightmare for Arsenal, because of his importance to the side.

Ozil has been ruled out for the rest of 2014 with a knee injury and has had to return from international duty early for treatment at the Gunners and it means that the North-London side are without their marquee player.

Ozil’s form had been questionable over recent times and a few felt that Arsenal’s form would improve without him in the team, but Keown has a differing opinion and feels that the German will be a big loss.

“I think it’s a bit of a nightmare to be honest. He was just beginning to prove that playing centrally is his best position,” Keown said in the Daily Mail.

“With Aaron Ramsey out it’s not great, but Wenger is blessed because he has a lot of players who can play in that role. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Cazorla and Sanchez could all fill in.

“Now Wenger will have to adjust his squad but for those people who think Ozil has not been effective enough, now we’ll see how Arsenal get on without him.

“I think playing centrally against Aston Villa was his best game of the season so it’s a shame he is out now just as he was starting to establish himself in that role.”

Ozil has struggled to find the form which made him such a big star when he was at Real Madrid since moving to England last year.

The World Cup winner was expected to push Arsenal on to the next level, but he has not managed to do so.

Even so, he remains one of the most creative outlets in this Gunners side and he will be a big miss for Arsene Wenger.

As Keown has hinted at, there was a notion that this Arsenal side was starting to be built to get the best out of Ozil, but this is a major set-back.

The 25-year-old was expected to thrive with the pace of Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck and the returning Theo Walcott around him, but it could be some time before he hits his peak again now after this latest setback.
