Juventus will reportedly prioritise the sale of Weston McKennie in the January transfer window, with Tottenham leading the race to sign the USA international.

According to CalcioMercato, Juventus must sell McKennie as soon as possible in the winter market if they’re to pull off the signing of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, with Tottenham the favourites to land the American midfielder as Antonio Conte looks to add to his midfield in January.

As per the report, Juventus will sell McKennie for around €30m (£25m) even if the midfielder continues to impress at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the Serie A side desperate to raise funds in order to balance the books and to bring in Milinkovic-Savic, who is expected to leave Lazio in January.

Midfield has been a problem area for Tottenham for most of the season, with fans and pundits critical of how limited Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur can be without any proper depth. Which is why McKennie would be an ideal signing in January for Conte.

Versatile to play numerous midfield positions and athletic enough to last an entire match, McKennie brings a certain X Factor that the likes of Hojbjerg and Bentancur are currently missing. And with Juventus now desperate to sell, a January move must be wrapped up soon.

Indeed, Tottenham can make a huge statement in the Premier League this season if they get their January signings nailed on. And McKennie would be a big step in the right direction for the north London side given how much the American offers to Conte’s side.

With a World Cup going on, interest is bound to increase for McKennie if the US progress far in the tournament. And with news that Juventus are keen to offload the midfielder, Tottenham could soon find themselves slacking in the race for the 24-year-old if other clubs come forward.

After all, competitions like the World Cup have the potential to raise a player’s profile to unimaginable heights. And McKennie is no exception, which could hinder Tottenham greatly in their bid to sign the American superstar from Juventus.
