Justin Thomas showed glimpses of his old self at last week’s PGA Championship, where he secured a top five finish.
Thomas ended his week at Aronimink on five-under, four shots off champion Aaron Rai in a tie for fourth place.
It was a very impressive showing from the American, who really came into his own when he won the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022.
Thomas loved the setup at Aronimink, which often provided a very difficult test for him and a long list of the world’s top golfers.
The two-time major winner is not in PGA Tour action this week at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, but Thomas has been hard at work in preparation for his imminent return.
Justin Thomas confirms what he’s been working on in practice
Sharing videos of himself in action on the range and at the gym, Thomas posted on his Instagram: “Nice week off to hone in and work on some mechanics I’ve been feeling the last month or so.
“Really been trying to work on keeping my hands and body moving in sync and not letting my arms run up and long at the top of my backswing.
“When they do that, I tend to not have as much control on the way down – with my tendency being to hang back and stand up on the way down while I throw my hands at it.
“Not ideal or very consistent [laughing].
“Lots of reps like these videos of less balls hit, but really focusing on where I’m feeling the club (butt end of the grip, handle, hands, arms, shaft of the club, etc) and my body as I swing.
“I’ll often keep my trainer [Kolby Tullier] in touch with what I’m trying to do mechanically so he can incorporate some of the things I’m trying to do in the gym as well.”

How has Justin Thomas performed since returning from injury?
It’s great insight from 16-time PGA Tour winner Thomas, who had a delayed return to golf this season after undergoing back surgery.
The American eased himself back with TGL, but now has eight PGA Tour appearances to his name in 2026, from which he has made seven cuts.
That one missed cut perhaps understandably arrived on his return at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he has since posted one top five, two top 10s and four top 25s.
Currently ranked 16th in the world, Thomas is scheduled to take on the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club next week.
He can be very satisfied with his efforts since his lengthy spell out with injury, particularly at the PGA Championship, with a first win since last year’s RBC Heritage perhaps now not too far away.
